Your toolkit
Small, simple things to try when talking to each other feels hard.
Take a 20-minute break
When a conversation is heating up
- Either of you can say: "I need a break — I'm coming back."
- Agree on a time to return (at least 20 minutes).
- Do something calming apart — walk, breathe, music. Don't rehearse the argument.
- Come back at the time you agreed.
Start gently
When you need to bring something up
- Start with "I feel…" instead of "You always…"
- Describe the situation, not their character.
- Say what you need: "Could we…?"
Repair phrases
When things have gone sideways
- "Can we start over?"
- "I'm sorry — that came out wrong."
- "I see your point."
- "I love you. Let's figure this out together."
Listen, then reflect
When one of you feels unheard
- One person talks; the other just listens.
- The listener repeats back: "What I'm hearing is…"
- Ask: "Did I get that right?" Then swap.
Daily appreciation
Every day, even good ones
- Share one specific thing you appreciated about your partner today.
- Say thank you for something small.
Calm your body first
When your heart is racing
- Breathe in for 4, hold for 4, out for 6. Repeat five times.
- Put your feet flat on the floor and notice five things you can see.
